Orfina in watchmaking

Orfina is a Swiss watch brand founded in 1922 and associated with Grenchen, one of Switzerland’s principal watchmaking centers. The company produced dress watches as well as practical sports, diving, aviation and military timepieces, but it is especially remembered for robust chronographs. Its most influential chapter began in the 1970s, when Orfina manufactured the original Porsche Design Chronograph I conceived by Ferdinand Alexander Porsche. The watch’s matte-black case and high-contrast instrument-style dial translated sports-car cockpit design to the wrist and helped establish the modern all-black tool-watch aesthetic. Orfina-branded and military-associated chronographs later appeared with established Swiss automatic movements, including Valjoux 7750 and Lemania 5100 variants. Today Orfina Swiss S.A. presents itself as a maker of Swiss tool watches from Grenchen and is owned by the Schifferle family.

Orfina watches have used a variety of sourced Swiss manual-winding, automatic, chronograph and quartz movements. Collector interest focuses especially on automatic chronographs powered by the Valjoux 7750 and Lemania 5100 families, including Porsche Design and military-associated references. Earlier dress watches may contain unrelated Swiss ébauches, while later watches vary by collection and production period. Movement calibre, jewel count and configuration should always be confirmed from the movement and reference rather than inferred from dial appearance.

Identification checklist

Confirm the ORFINA signature, case and reference numbers, movement calibre, case-back text and any military or Porsche Design markings. Early black-coated chronographs often show honest edge wear, but refinished cases, replacement dials, hands, crowns, pushers and bracelets can materially affect collectability. Porsche Design variants differ by dial signature, case material, movement and military markings. Compare fonts, subdial layout and day-date arrangement with a documented matching reference, and have valuable examples opened by a qualified specialist.

Preservation guidance

Service mechanical chronographs only with a watchmaker experienced in the specific Valjoux, Lemania or other fitted calibre. Preserve original black coatings, dial printing, luminous material and case-back engravings; aggressive polishing or recoating can erase important evidence. Treat untested vintage watches as non-water-resistant, replace seals during service and pressure-test only when appropriate. Do not operate chronograph pushers underwater. Retain original bracelets, straps, buckles, boxes, papers and replaced service parts.
